The Kids Are Grown… Now What? Finding Joy in Life Beyond the Nest

There comes a time in life when you look around your home and realize just how much things have changed. The kids are grown. They’re making their own decisions, building their own lives, and heading off on adventures of their own. As parents, isn’t that exactly what we hoped for?

We raised them to be independent, to make good choices, and to find their own way in the world. There’s such a wonderful feeling of pride watching them do just that. But I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t a little sadness mixed in, too.

When the House Gets a Little Too Quiet

Sometimes the house is just a little too quiet. It’s funny the things you find yourself missing.

I remember the kids making up their own game of pizza delivery guy. I couldn’t even begin to tell you how much laughter filled our house when they played. They’d get so caught up in their little world, having the best time together. Those were the sounds of childhood. The kind of laughter that could make you smile no matter what kind of day you were having.

Then there were the times they were fighting, and I’d make them hold hands and sing Jesus Loves Me as their punishment. Can you just picture it? Two kids who were probably not very happy with each other, standing there holding hands and singing together…maybe a little hand squeezing came along with it. Oh, the things we come up with as parents!

Those are the memories that make me smile now. Back then, it was just everyday life. The noise, the laughter, the arguments, the messes, and all the little things that came with raising a family. Now, they’re the moments I’d love to hear just one more time.

Proud of Who They’ve Become

As much as I miss those days, there’s something pretty special about watching your children grow into adults. You see the people they’ve become, the lives they’re creating, and the journeys they’re taking. You realize that all those years of parenting, teaching, worrying, encouraging, and loving helped prepare them for this.

We did what we were supposed to do. We raised them to spread their wings, but that doesn’t mean we stop being parents. I don’t think that ever happens! It just means our role changes a little. We’re still here to love them, cheer them on, offer advice when they want it, and be there whenever they need us.

So, What’s Next for Us?

That’s a question I’ve been thinking about more and more. When so much of your life has revolved around raising a family, it can take a little time to figure out what this next chapter looks like. We’re discovering that life beyond the nest doesn’t have to mean slowing down or sitting around wondering what to do next.

For Bill and me, it means finding new adventures together. Whether it’s going to our camper, working on plans for our lake property, trying new projects, or simply enjoying a quiet drive together, we’re learning to embrace this season of life.

We’re creating new memories while holding on to the ones that will always mean so much to us. That’s something I’m genuinely excited about.

The Nest May Be Quieter, but Life Isn’t Over

I think sometimes we get so caught up in being Mom and Dad that we forget we’re still individuals with dreams, interests, and things we’d like to experience. There’s a whole world out there waiting to be explored.

Maybe it’s traveling somewhere new, learning a new skill, starting a hobby, creating something with your hands, or just taking time to enjoy the little things. Maybe it’s just rediscovering the things you and your spouse love doing together.

We don’t have to have it all figured out. We can simply enjoy the journey as it unfolds.

A New Chapter, With a Heart Full of Memories

I’ll always treasure those years when the house was full of little voices, laughter, and the occasional sibling disagreement. Yes, there will probably always be days when I wish I could turn back the clock for just a little while, but I’m also looking forward to everything that’s still ahead: the adventures we haven’t taken, the places we haven’t seen., the projects we haven’t started, a nd the memories we haven’t made yet.

Life beyond the nest isn’t about leaving those wonderful years behind. It’s about carrying them with us as we begin a new chapter. I have a feeling this next chapter is going to be a pretty good one. 💜

If you’re an empty nester, we’d love to know. What’s one little thing you miss most about having your kids at home?

Maybe it’s the noise, the laughter, the family dinners, or even those silly little arguments. We would love to hear your memories.

Until next time, here’s to new adventures, treasured memories, and finding joy in every season of life.
